Now Shaun Murphy is the current title holder, and he has said that currently he has two goals in life. These are to retain the championship and to move to number one in the world snooker rankings. Despite his confident ambitions, it is extremely unusual for anyone to win back to back championships. In fact it has only been achieved two times in the event’s thirty two year history, and that was by Steve Davis and Stephen Henry. Christened Ronald Antonio, he is known as the rocket because of his fast and attacking style and he has three world championships to his name. Officially he has earned £6,000,000 out of snooker, a total that has been surpassed only by Steve Davis. Steve Davis has described him as having the most natural snooker talent of all players in game’s history. He has been playing professional snooker form the age of 16 and won his first World Championship in 2001 when he was 26. Currently the bookies have him as the 4/1 favourite. John Higgins the current World Champion is ranked at number two in the world and has been ranked number one on three separate occasions. He is three times World Champion (1998, 2007 and 2009) and has won seventeen other ranking titles. Born in 1975, he turned professional at the age of 17. He has been awarded the MBE for his contribution to sport. Though less rich than O Sullivan, he has amassed £2,700,000 in prize money.
