Williams, desperately clinging to power as chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, recently described Steve Davis as «clueless and useless.» Now he has turned his attention to some of the game’s other stars. He describes Dennis Taylor as «pathetic and contemptible.» He says Stephen Hendry has a problem «and will never win anything major again.» And of Ronnie O’Sullivan he declares: «I can’t help it if his mother and father are in jail.» Williams faces an AGM in Birmingham on December 23 when he hopes players will vote his board back into power. But his controversial outburst is hardly likely to drum up support. Asked by a colleague whether the members would support his six-man board at the annual meeting, 65-year-old Williams, the game’s top administrator, blurted: «Well, I don’t know. Snooker players are not the most intelligent people in the world, you know.» Williams then attacked Taylor, who with Davis and Terry Griffiths narrowly failed in a bid to oust the Williams regime. «He’s pathetic,» Williams told a source. «The man is contemptible the way he’s behaving - and it’s all because of Ian Doyle (the most powerful manager in snooker, whose clients include Hendry and O’Sullivan).» Then came his remarkable attacks on Hendry, snooker’s most successful player, and O’Sullivan, the game’s biggest attraction who has taken a break because of stress. Talking about the out-of-form Hendry, who lost his last ranking match 9-0 to fellow Scot Marcus Campbell, Williams snapped: «He’s got the aggravation with Doyle. «I know the problem with Hendry. He’ll never win anything major again, not while he’s got this problem with Doyle. And as for the other fellow, O’Sullivan, I can’t help it if his father and mother are in jail, can I?» The six-man board, chaired by Williams, includes elected members Jim Meadowcroft and Bob Close. Williams also co-opted ex-world champion Ray Reardon, former player David Taylor, and Jim McMahon, a Scottish driving instructor who once managed nephew Alan McManus. Williams’ outburst has sparked fury. An angry Dennis Taylor said: «This has now become personal and that is a great pity. I am not prepared to enter into public attacks. «There is more to be done in snooker than get involved in name calling. «I’ll concern myself only with how I think snooker can be improved.» Doyle said: «If these comments are true then people can draw their own conclusions about who is running this game.» Williams’ words and allegations have upset even his own supporters, who believe it’s now time for him to quit before the forthcoming annual meeting. Last year Williams sacked chief executive Jim McKenzie, with Hendry responding by saying: «The game is rotten from top to bottom.»

Williams and snooker’s current board are up for re-election in Birmingham on December 23. Doyle insisted: «The attack on Stephen and myself is bad enough, but to also attack Dennis Taylor and particularly Ronnie O’Sullivan at this time is disgusting.» O’Sullivan withdrew from his last two events due to exhaustion. Since Williams replaced Geoff Foulds in March 1997 the game has been torn apart by in-fighting, with sponsors staying away. Former chief executive Jim McKenzie was sacked 12 months ago and his case for unfair dismissal is due to be heard early in the New Year. Top TV commentator Clive Everton was recently banned from press-rooms for speaking out against the board.

One of Williams’s critics, BBC commentator Clive Everton, who is banned by the WPBSA from every tournament press room, called the AGM «A black day for snooker.» CueMasters supremo Ian Doyle, who looks after the likes of Stephen Hendry, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Ken Doherty and Mark Williams, and is the most vocal critic said: «Snooker has tremendous potential, but I wonder now if it will ever be realised. «I take some heart from the vote, but not a great deal. I’m disappointed Terry Griffiths pulled out of the ballot, but Terry is his own man and will have his own reasons for that.» Griffiths withdrew midway through the election, stating others were sacrificing their own chances to move him further up the voting order. «I didn’t want to be part of a split board, because that isn’t any good for me and neither do I think it is in the interests of the members,» said Griffiths. Williams, who launched a string of personal attacks on Hendry, Davis and Taylor, said he was sorry Griffiths was not elected. «I would like to have seen Terry on the board,» said Williams. «I think everyone should be pleased with the outcome. There will be no problems created by me, although I don’t know about those with self interests.» Jim Meadowcroft and David Taylor, who had helped keep Williams in power over the last year, failed to be re-elected.

But Doyle said: «I’ve spoken to all my players, and they will bin the letter. «If the WPBSA believe they can frighten players of the stature of Stephen Hendry, they have read the situation very badly.» Scottish Mirror columnist Hendry has yet to receive the letter and first read of it in a newspaper yesterday. He said last night: «I was surprised to read what was a private letter in a Sunday tabloid.» On Christmas Eve, Hendry served a High Court injunction on the WPBSA contesting the legality of decisions taken during the game’s December AGM. WPBSA chairman Rex Williams said he was «surprised» the letter had been leaked. Last week he claimed «spies» were at work in the WPBSA’s Bristol HQ, which has been searched for bugging devices. And Blake said: «I have not seen any newspapers - I’ve been away.» He was unwilling to comment on the letter carrying his name, or how it appeared in the press before the players had received it. Doyle added: «I am very confident that Rex Williams will be erased from this game for ever and some of his henchmen will go with him. «They are all in for a mighty shock in the next few weeks.»
