rusel: Ricky Walden waits to find out opponents for Welsh Open and German Masters RICKY Walden will reap the first benefits of being in the world top 16 at the Welsh Open qualifying tournament. The contest, scheduled to take place at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield, sees the Bagillt ace and the rest of the top 16, including reigning world champion Neil Robertson, John Higgins, Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O’Sullivan, come in at the final qualifying round, after other entrants, including 90s snooker sensation James Wattana, Jimmy White, Steve Davis and Tony Drago, have gone through up to four rounds of qualifying. Walden will have only one match to play, and one chance to win, at the event, which starts on February 8, as his draw sets up a potential match with Chinese rising star Liang Wenbo, who will also be Walden’s opponent in the PTC Championship in March. Before that Walden faces the challenge of the German Masters in Berlin, where he has been drawn to face the winner of a wildcard qualifier between England’s Jack Lisowski and 15-year-old Belgian Luca Brecel. The Masters, which lost its ranking status in 1998 and returns as a ranking tournament for the first time this year, runs from February 2-6 and offers prize money of up to 50,000 Euros with 2,000 Euros going to the highest break of the competition.
