rockabilly_girl: В интревью bbc radio 5 live несколько дней назад о сказал, что думает возвращаться и уже в след. году попытаться клалифицироваться для серьёзного турнира по снукеру. Он сказал, что начал тренировки и теперь достаточно часто делает "сенчурис". Уже несколько лет он бореться с раком горла, но похоже, он наконец побеждает болезнь, поэтому ждёт не дождётся, когда будет играть в профессионально.

rusel: Snooker: When Higgins fought Welsh fansJul 1 2007 by Staff Reporter, Wales On Sunday ALEX ‘Hurricane’ Higgins has endured a love/hate relationship with his sport – a snooker career with towering highs matched by shattering lows. Now, according to his new book, it turns out that the two-time World champion also has a love/hate relationship with Wales. His autobiography From the Eye of the Hurricane describes not only his relationships with Terry Griffiths and Ray Reardon, but also a passionate train tryst with a Welsh girl – as well as an unsavoury night in Llanelli that ended his friendship with Griffiths. Higgins’ career was etched with peaks and troughs. The flawed genius’ downfall was caused by drink, women and too much time spent in casinos. In 1972, the 22-year-old Higgins won the World Championship at his first attempt, making him the youngest winner until Stephen Hendry’s victory in 1990. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT Four years later he was in the final again, this time facing Welshman Reardon, the world No 1 and six-time champion. Despite Reardon’s record, Higgins claims to have felt no pressure going into the match and the two men even headed out for a few drinks together on the eve of the final. “Ray didn’t drink as much as I did, or stay as late. What did I care? I was invincible wasn’t I?” says Higgins. “I had seen off all the big boys already – (Cliff) Thorburn, (John) Spencer and (Eddie) Charlton. All I needed to do now was to add Reardon to the list.” But Higgins’ celebrations were premature. Reardon was crowned champion again with a comprehensive 27-16 victory. That wasn’t the first time that the Welshman with the widow’s peak had scuppered Higgins’ hopes of regaining the world title – he knocked him out at the semi-final stage the previous year= It wasn’t until 1982 that the Irishman extracted revenge on his old Celtic foe, becoming champion for a second time. Once the final frame was over the two men, soldiers of the table who had battled many times, shared an emotional embrace. “I walked over to Ray and we hugged,” Higgins said. “The respect for each other was mutual. It had been an honour to play him in the final and even in my moment of triumph I felt for him. He was such a great professional, a gent and a great competitor.” A great gent or not, Higgins claims that Reardon was spitting feathers in one tournament when the two clashed. Higgins had brought his soon-to-be second wife Lynn to watch a game when the two men played each other. “She found herself sat close to where Ray was during play,” he says. “Ray has a roving eye like the best of them and between frames and shots he started to chat up my girlfriend, not that he knew her as such then. “I was determined to let the result do my talking for me – and it did. Reardon 3, Higgins 5. “To Reardon’s further dismay, I walked over to Lynn and gave her a peck on the cheek. The trophy, the cheque and the girl were mine. “I led Lynn off to the sponsor’s room for a glass of champagne and I could feel Reardon’s eyes burrowing into my back. I loved it.” In 1975 Griffiths, an amateur at the time, organised an evening of snooker with Higgins at a cinema in Llanelli. What started out as a pleasant, albeit highly competitive night’s play ended in a brawl. In the interval Higgins popped out to get some fresh air – only to find himself in the most unexpected of places. “A Welsh mate of mine sneaked off to the nearest pub,” he said. “We walked in, fought our way through to the bar, which was surprisingly busy, and stopped in utter amazement. “The reason for the place’s popularity was staring me in the face – a smiling, attractive and well-endowed topless barmaid. Unbeknown to us we’d walked into the first legalised topless bar in Britain.” When he returned to the cinema-turned snooker hall Higgins set about sinking drinks rather than balls and his game slipped. Griffiths, the underdog, won – and not long after, events got heated. One member of the audience took a dislike to the amorous attentions he was paying to a female spectator. A boozed-up Higgins went to punch the man and missed, hitting someone else instead. “I was just showing off, trying to re-establish myself after getting beaten. The next thing I know I’m throwing a punch at this huge Welshman,” he writes. “Thanks to the drink, I missed. However, I did end up smacking the guy beside him and all hell broke loose. “I could feel I was on a loser and so I stupidly picked up a bottle to wave around at anyone who thought I was fair game. “Shouting abuse and threats, I went into back-street Belfast mode, inviting anyone and everyone to take their chances. Terry just rushed me and disarmed me in one move. I left while I was winning, so to speak.” Higgins says that the following day Griffiths visited him in search of an apology, but at the time Higgins refused. “I was feeling a bit ashamed and embarrassed at what I had done, but when I’m in the wrong I won’t admit it or show remorse; it’s just not in my nature.” But things change. Higgins has used his autobiography to finally give Griffiths the apology he never got in 1975. “Terry, I am truly sorry for the way I behaved that night, not only to your family, but to the many friends and supporters who came to watch us both play,” he writes. His autobiography also features his passion for Welsh women, and in particular a girl he met on a train. “That was quite a journey I can tell you. Sex in a British rail toilet is not that easy but it is great fun – especially twice,” he says.

Higgins, who was a close friend of everones favourite maniac, Ollie Reed, demanded people call him ’sir’, later dated a women who claimed to be a millionaire, as it turned out she was a prostitute who lived in a council house and eventually stabbed ‘Sir’ Alex. It comes as no surprise that a play has been made of his life.

The UDA commander kicked off the bid last week and has vowed to write to Stormont Sports Minister Nelson McCausland to ask for support. South Belfast ‘brigadier’ Jackie said cancer-ravaged Higgins deserved the award because he was an Ulster sports icon as important as George Best. Doctors told the frail former World Champion, who lost his teeth battling throat cancer, he must build up his health before risking surgery. But 61-year-old Higgins can only eat mashed food and his weight had already plummeted to seven stone. Dentist Dr Daniel Simon said last night: "It's a vicious circle. "He can't get better and have the new teeth unless he eats and gets back to health. But he can't eat without the teeth." He added: "Right now he is in a very weak situation in his general health, he is not feeling very well, his lungs are not good. "These are all complications for a general anaesthetic." Higgins, who blew a Ј3million fortune as he battled booze problems, failed medical tests after flying to Marbella in Spain for the specialist treatment. Star pals had raised Ј20,000 for the surgery, which involves implanting bolts to his jaw for the dentures. Higgins snubbed a free hotel to stay at a pal's pad in nearby Cabopino. He spent most of the week sipping rum in a bar and chain-smoking cigarettes. A source said: "The whole week I barely saw him eat a morsel of food. He was quite rude and insulting to people who tried to help him. It's sad."
